Mwananchi Carbon partners with Tanzanian villages to restore degraded land, grow tree nurseries, and build community-owned carbon projects — grounded in Free, Prior and Informed Consent.
Who We Are
Mwananchi Carbon is a Tanzanian nature-based carbon start-up headquartered in Arusha, with regional aspirations across East Africa. Our mission is to catalyze village-based nature and livelihood restoration — raising awareness of environmental degradation, reversing it at community scale, and generating real income for low-income, grassroots communities through carbon trade and associated nature-based solutions.
We work directly with villagers and stakeholders who hold full mandate to decide, design, manage, and earn from restoration and preservation on their own village, communal, and individual land.
Mwananchi — Swahili for "citizen." The company is named for the people it exists to serve.
What We Do
Our work moves in sequence — from training and land recovery, to nursery-based income, to community carbon trade.
We train communities in ecologically sound grass and tree species, focused on areas highly vulnerable to long droughts and flooding.
We grow income-generating opportunities through tree nursery development and seedling processing and trade at village level.
We facilitate carbon sequestration and carbon trade, structured so villages retain ownership and share directly in the returns.
Why Partner With Us
Villages hold the mandate and the upside, reducing social and reputational risk for investors and buyers.
Rooted in Arusha with an operating model designed to extend across East Africa.
Built toward high-integrity, nature-based carbon standards paired with measurable grassroots livelihood impact.
